Open culture within the nuclear industry
Talking about an open culture
Safecall joins global experts from the nuclear industry to talk about the importance of maintaining an open culture
This week Safecall’s Head of Sales Beverley Oliver spoke at the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) workshop on Understanding and Mitigating the Insider Threat. This was hosted in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Delegates and speakers came from the world’s leading nuclear operations, regulators and technology specialists including PERSEREC, IAEA, FANC, ENEC, Urenco, ITER, IBM and more. The three day event saw around 100 attendees explore all elements of insider threats ranging from the evolution of the landscape and understanding human behaviour, through to reviewing the approach taken by other sectors with similar challenges.
Day one focused largely on identifying the types of threats faced and how to engage employees at the outset and promote trustworthiness. Beverley spoke on day two about the practical and good practice steps of creating and maintaining a culture where all reports of concerns are welcomed and follow up of those concerns is handled effectively. Day three was hosted by IBM who demonstrated various Artificial Intelligence and Analytics that work hand-in-hand with the human element to help detect, mitigate and deter security threats.
“The conference was a huge success. All delegates played such an active part during all presentations and workshops. The sharing of knowledge of security leaders from major worldwide power plants, regulators, and behavioural observation experts was a great example of peers learning from each other’s experiences and there was strong agreement that a supportive culture is key in encouraging employees to behave in a trustworthy manner and to speak up when they feel something just isn’t right” said Beverley.
